187 Ways To Save Money As A Student – Part One - 14 April 2009
Once you’ve raised the money you need to study, you’re going to have to spend it wisely. Here’s the start of our great series designed to save you money!
Shop around for the best graduate bank account! Different banks have different bonuses and benefits, so don’t just sign up to the first one you see! And watch out that a quick free gift doesn’t hide nasty charges and extortionate interest rates! Many of the comparison websites like moneysavingexpert.com have a search facility for student accounts, and if in doubt, make appointments to see bank managers at several banks before you choose.
Check out the different mobile phone offers. Estimate who you will be calling, for how long and where they are. Inclusive minutes and texts are great but added benefits like unlimited calls to landlines could be a lifesaver when you’re broke and need to call home! If you have never had a mobile on monthly payments before, consider how you will limit your spending, in case you go over your monthly allowances. Does your phone company send you a warning before you spend more than you should?
Buy a water bottle with its own filter and fill up from the tap. Buying bottled water costs a small fortune. Both Go Outdoors and Natural Choice have a range of water bottle available that filter water internally.
Visit the local hairdressing college for a cheaper, more modern haircut! Hairdressers-in-training will offer all the latest styles at only a fraction of the price.
Get student discounts wherever you can. Apple computers offer educational discounts on both hardware and software products.
Watch TV for free on your computer. There are several services available like Zattoo that can save you money in rental, cable, satellite and licensing costs besides the actual cost of the telly itself!
Take advantage of offers for nights out. Orange offers half-price cinema tickets on Wednesdays, the Arts Council are offering free theatre tickets for the under 25s called ‘A Night Less Ordinary’ and most pubs have a ‘pound a drink’ night. Check out Student Beans for most offers.
